What is Brenneskog?

Over the last few years I've been pondering many, many different aspects of my work. I wanted to get away from using exotic rainforest wood and work with underutilized local species. I wanted fewer periods of creative "block". I wanted to create a style of my own, rather than just putting my spin on an established style or making one-offs that are never related to each other. I wanted to pay respect to my ancestors through my work and pay homage for the spiritual joy that my work has allowed me to have. I wanted to get away from the "perfect surface", "flawless finish" ideal and explore texture and the use of other materials and skills. I wanted my work to convey a sense of magic and fantasy, and be functional and comfortable to the eye and touch. In one wonderful epiphany all these wants became Brenneskog. Many different paths all leading to the same destination.

The wood is local spruce, tough, highly figured and unpretentious and yes there are cracks, but these became part of the texture and enhance the work. The surfaces are charred, polished and covered with a high quality, durable matte finish.

The main elements of Brenneskog are thick slabs and "Dragon's Teeth", which along with texture and color provide a continuity between pieces.

I like to imagine that when the fallen warriors are feasting in Valhalla they are sitting in Brenneskog chairs at Brenneskog tables.
